An hierarchical oblique factor analysis of Eysenck's rating study of 700 neurotics

- Abstract
- Thirty-nine ratings were carried out on 700 neurotics and the data were factored but not rotated. These unrotated factors were interpreted by Eysenck (1944) as neuroticism, extraversion, and hypochondriasis. These important data have been refactored using hierarchical oblique factor analysis, and the various solutions, beginning with the unrotated solution for comparison with the unrotated solution of Eysenck, are presented in detail. The interpretations from the rotated primary factors of this reanalysis do not agree with Eysenck’s interpretations, which have since been featured in his system. The second order solution proves to be a comparable obfuscation to the unrotated solution, in contrast to the clarity of the rotated primary factor solution.
